Baddest Female CL rocked the mike at Mad Decent Block Party LA on Saturday.
LOS ANGELES — The singer and rapper CL is so popular in her native South Korea that fans earlier this year nearly voted her to the top of Time magazine’s Power 100 readers’ poll (Vladimir Putin won).
With her contining takeover of the US, through her high profile collabs with Diplo (on “Dr. Pepper”) and Skrillex (“Dirty Vibe”), she should easily be in contention again next year.
Her debut solo album (she is a member of the Korean girl group 2NE1) is a heartbeat away, and Saturday CL gave Mad Decent Block Party here in Los Angeles a taste.
Introduced by the rapper RiFF RAFF — to the loudest cheers of the day at that point — CL appeared on stage in an oversized leather jacket, shook her newly dyed gray hair and went straight into her song “MTBD.”
The crowd — clearly very CL-savvy — rapped along.
She followed that up with a song more familar to US audiences: “Dr. Pepper,” her collaboration with Diplo, RiFF RAFF and OG Maco. The crowd went wild. They went wild again when Diplo emerged on stage for the second verse. The three danced and jumped through the party track, and then just like that, CL exited the stage — a short two-song tease of what’s to come this fall and next year.
CL recently gave her first radio interview in the US (to 99.7 in San Francisco) and spoke about her goals in the US. “I just want to put out good music,” she told DJ Christian Saad. “This is a challenge for me. I’m enjoying the freedom. My main goal is to put out good music.”
Asked how she writes music, she says she works with her producers quite a bit in the studio. “It comes from conversation, for me,” she said. “And it has to mean something to me and be authentic. So we always start with just talking about random stuff.”
