The 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) which was held on 29 November from 7 pm to 11 pm in the largest concert arena in Singapore. The Singapore Indoor Stadium, received a hot response and recorded an average viewership rating of 4.09% with a high of 5.56% (average viewership from 6 cable channels: Mnet, KM, tvN, Olive, On Style and Story On).
In addition, MAMA was broadcasted live across about 13 digital platforms such as on the world’s largest video-sharing site, Youtube (youtube.com/Mnet), on China’s largest portal site, sohu.com (www.sohu.com), etc. and had a phenomenal 8 170 000 viewers watching online. This figure, is a huge jump of more than twice the number of viewers last year (3 600 000 viewers).
Of particular note were the top 5 performances that drew the highest viewership ratings during the 4 hour show. These were the performances by 2NE1, SNSD, Super Junior, the joint performance by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg and the joint performance by Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap and 2NE1’s CL.
2NE1 captured and dominated the stage with their unique charisma, while Super Junior gave a performance worthy of their position as leaders in Kpop and worthy of Asia’s largest awards show by executing a large-scale performance of ‘Superman’ and ‘Sorry Sorry’ which included over 100 backup performers.
Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap and 2NE1’s CL performed ‘Where Is The Love’ as a commendation to Asia and peace that not only captured the eyes and ears of the packed stadium of over 10 000 people, but undoubtedly, those who were watching online as well.
On that day, there were 18 categories, including 3 grand awards up for grabs and 7 categories whose winners were already decided, giving a total of 25 categories. The winners of the 3 grand awards were 2NE1’s I Am The Best for Best Song of the Year, SNSD for Best Artist of the Year and Super Junior (Mr. Simple) for Best Album of the Year. Super Junior not only won the Best Album of the Year, they also won Best Male Group and Singapore’s Choice, making them the group with the most awards that night. 2NE1 (Best Song of the Year and Best Vocal Performance Group), SNSD (Best Artist of the Year and Best Female Group) and Baek Ji Young (Best Female Artist and Best OST) each won 2 awards each.
